Saura Gorge
It was first taken under state protection by the Decision of the akim of the region No. 487 dated 05/07/1993. In order to increase the tourist attractiveness of the Saura tract, in 2014, archaeological studies of the Saura fortress were conducted under the guidance of archaeologist A.Astafiev.
Currently, by Decree of the Akimat of the Mangystau region No. 3 dated January 5, 2018, it is included in the State List of Historical and Cultural Monuments of local significance.
The ruins of the Saurin fortress have been known for a long time. The remains of the fortress wall were a wide stone-soil rampart with a length of more than 30 m, blocking the narrow isthmus of a long outlier formed by a small canyon and a deep dry riverbed. At the base of the canyon there is a freshwater lake Karakul, fed by springs from an aquifer of marl clays. The depth of the lake is about 5 m. It is home to a large population of marsh turtles.
